“Yugen” is a term used in Japanese aesthetics to describe a dark, mysterious beauty. Imagine, for example, the ominous appeal of an approaching thunder storm. This goes a long way to describe the aesthetic nature of Pointless Orchestra. The goal of the group was to dispense with the simple, repetitive beats and melodies that characterize most popular music. Instead, they shifted the focus to creating a narrative through the subtle manipulation of sound. This allowed them to paint exotic sonic environments that open the mind to a wide variety of imaginary places and experiences.
The members were committed to using the group as a totally open structure for creativity. As a result, they had a constantly evolving line-up, multiple guest musicians, and a willingness to use any means necessary to create an interesting performance. Their live sets often included projected films, dancers, live painting, poets, video, and story tellers. Their sounds derived from musical instruments from around the world, often played with extended techniques. They also used home made instruments and electronic manipulation of their sounds.
The group existed from 1994 until 2005. This collection of recordings represents some of the highlights of their recorded works.
