My wife and I had a son named Paul who passed away unexpectedly on 5/28/2010. In the dark, heavy months that followed, my friends urged me to use music to work through my grief. Many of them generously lent their time and talents to assist in this process.
I made “Ascend” with the intention of honoring my son. I wanted the music to be reverent and uplifting. I chose elements from spiritual music, including chant, harmonic singing, chimes, and a hymn. As I listen back to this piece years later, however, I mostly hear a guy struggling with his own darkness. Fortunately, the piece ends with a hymn that seems to lift it up into the light. Thank you to all the wonderful people who contributed to this project. I couldn't have done this alone.
I am giving this recording away for free because I hate the idea of making money off of it. I hope it has some sort of meaning to my listeners.
